About The Project

Assesment of Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Resources and Ecosystems to Implement the Blue Economy Action Plan

Bangladesh has vast coastal and marine resources along its south edge as the Bay of Bengal is situated in the south of Bangladesh. There is a total of 166,000 sq. km. water area including Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Bangladesh has achieved its sovereign rights over 1,18,813 square kilometer maritime area after resolution of the dispute settled by ITLOS with the neighboring countries of Myanmar and India in 2012 and in 2014 respectively. Being directed by the Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh relevant ministries have formulated a Blue Economy Action Plan which is being implemented, to harness economic development ensuring sustainable use of marine resources. Department of Environment has formulated blue economy action plan which are being implemented to conserve marine ecosystem, control sea pollution, ensure environment friendly management and harvesting of marine resources, mainstreaming marine and coastal biodiversity conservation and management activities. Bangladesh is rich not only in terms of its vast water areas but also in terms of the biological diversity. Marine fisheries sector plays an important role in the economy of Bangladesh in terms of nutrition, income, employment and foreign exchange earnings. Marine fish production increased to 5.89 million tons which is 17.74% of the country's total fish production. The marine fisheries provide a livelihood for millions of people in the Bay of Bengal.

Blue Economy requires a balanced approach among conservation, development and utilization of marine and coastal ecosystems, all oceanic resources and services with a view to enhancing their value and generating employment, secured productive marine economy and healthy marine ecosystem. Seas and oceans with their largely unexplored biodiversity, offer significant potential for innovation on two different fronts: a better understanding of marine and maritime resources and their biodiversity, and a more efficient exploitation of the economic and scientific potential of those resources.

The Department of Environment has developed a Blue Economy Action Plan (BEAP) as a part of the Government initiative on preparation and implementation of the Blue Economy Action Plan for the country. This assignment is to assess the coastal and marine biodiversity resources and ecosystems.
